Obituary for Alyne "Granny" Sills

Alyne Elizabeth Sills, age 102, joined the Heavenly Father on January 16, 2023. She was born in Waxahachie, Texas, on March 10, 1920 to Ruby Stanbury and William Curry. Described as primitive in a modern world, she remembered the first time she went to town was in a horse and buggy. Though she was born into a time when little emphasis was placed on education, Alyne was smart and resourceful. She was a strong woman who was educated by work, and life. She made her living as a seamstress for the Hager Slacks Company for many years and was quite talented. On September 2, 1944 she married John Preston Sills and the couple welcomed one son, James Everett Sills. They shared their lives together until his passing.

Known to many as Red Bird, and most affectionately as Granny, Alyne loved her family, her children, and her grandchildren with abundance. She could often be found with her five grandsons, and many great grandchildren spending time not only as their grandmother, but as their friend. Their childhood days were filled with Alyne armed with a five gallon bucket, a pound of bacon and a roll of drapery cord – all tools she used for them in catch buckets full of crawdaddys, in Boyce, Texas. She loved life! Some of her greatest joys were cooking, fishing, lots of gardening and sharing her life with her family. Alyne’s favorite place to be was home, in Sardis, Texas, though not in the house – she had to be outside. She enjoyed country music, that she listened to on 8 track tapes with her husband; evenings were filled with watching Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, Buck Owens, Hee Haw and Saturday Night Wrestling. Alyne was a God fearing woman who read the bible often. She was always at the ready to help others. She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Preston Sills.

Alyne is survived by her son James Everett Sills; daughter Lanelle Miller; five grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and numerous friends.
