Obituary for David Lawrence Smith

David Lawrence Smith of Red Oak, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 7th at the age of 76. He was born on July 7th 1944, to Charles Clinton and Irene Smith in Houston, Texas, and raised in Waxahachie, Texas, the youngest of 5 children. Dave graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1962, where he was honored as an award-winning basketball player and was named to the All-State team. He then attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he continued his basketball career and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of North Texas.

In 1966 he married Julia Carolyn Smith, and raised 3 daughters. He made a long and successful career in teaching, coaching, and buying and selling real estate.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Smith, children, Stephanie (Shane) Starrett, Cindy Smith(Scotty Thompson), Kim (Jimmy) Grace, and sister, Charlene Johnson. Grandchildren include Mallory (David) Nash, Nick (Robyn) Starrett, Adelle and James Grace, and great-grandchild, Artemis Nash.

He is preceded in death by mother, Irene Smith, brothers, Joe Patton, Charles Smith, and sister, Pat Rives.
Dave loved all sports, especially basketball, and enjoyed spending his time outdoors fishing and working

Friends and family are welcome to join in a celebration of Dave’s life on Sunday, September 27th anytime between 1-3 PM, at Chapman Park, 1805 Alexander Dr. Waxahachie, Texas.
