Obituary for David Stanley

David Lee Stanley passed away on February 15, 2022, at his home in Waxahachie, Texas.
David was born on February 24, 1935, in Tyler, Texas, to Hugh and Rosalee Stanley. Rosalee passed when David was 12 days old, and he was then welcomed into the family of his uncle and aunt, C.B. and Clora Stanley, gaining four older brothers.

The family moved to Waxahachie in 1938, where he attended and graduated from Waxahachie schools. He went on to earn degrees from The University of North Texas and La Salle University. David married Sue Jones in 1959, and they were blessed with two children, Carol and Scott.

Upon graduating from college, he began his career in the insurance business. The last 29 years of his career were spent with Texas Farm Bureau in Waco, Texas. In the words of a dear friend and coworker, ‘‘David is remembered as a good leader, a man of integrity, well-respected and loved by everyone he interacted with”.
When he and Sue retired, they moved back to Waxahachie to live full-time at the family lake house. David served at Farley Street Baptist Church and The Texas Baptist Home for Children, a place that was very dear to his heart. David (also known as “Dave,” “Dad,” “Granddad,” “PawPaw,” and “Uncle Dave”) was a friend to all he met. He is remembered by all for his gift of hospitality-, hosting reunions, church groups, game nights, and all of their kids’ and grandkids’ friends every summer. Dave made sure that anyone who visited the lake had the chance to learn to ski and to enjoy an ice cream float on the back deck. He also spent many hunting seasons at “The Deer Lease,” not as much for hunting as spending time with his family. He was always present around the campfire for a good story and a good laugh, and up before anyone else to make breakfast. To know David was to love him, and to know David was to be loved by him.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Rosalee, his uncle and aunt, C.B. and Clora, and siblings Hughleene, Ralph, Richard, Bruce, Dan, and Ted.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue Stanley, daughter Carol (Bill) Hyman of Huntsville, and son Scott (Jasmin) Stanley of Harker Heights. He loved his family dearly, including his five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Brooke (husband Riley and children Harlow, Hudson, and Holden) Walker, Katy (husband Kahler and children Abby, Ava, and Ameynah) Stone, Chris (wife Kim and children Weston, Bryce, and Aubrie) Stanley, Abbey (husband Steven and children Miles and soon-expected baby girl) Heffner, and Madison Stanley (fiancē Callen Britton). David is also survived by his extended family, including in-laws, nieces, and nephews, and many friends who considered him family.

To list everyone who made his dream of living out his final days at home possible cannot be done. Still, the family is forever thankful to Bristol Hospice (particularly Gayla and Gina) and Vineyard Home Health (especially Jake and Alexis) for helping Sue take such good care of him during this season. You are invited to celebrate David’s life with us at Farley Street Baptist Church, 1116 Brown Street, Waxahachie, on Saturday, February 19 at 2:00 pm with visitation from 1:00-1:45. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Texas Baptist Home for Children (tbhc.org) or the charity of your choice.
