Obituary for George Reid Simmons

George Reid Simmons, 74, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in Waxahachie. George was born on February 19, 1946 in Roby Texas to Jeff and Alice (Casey) Simmons.

It’s said that George had his mom wrapped around his finger as he was the baby of 6. Confidently that was repeated throughout his life. He was a friend to all who never met a stranger and always lent a helping hand. He loved hard and fought hard.

After school in Roby George enlisted in the Army and began his 23-year career. He was a brave soldier who served multiple tours in Vietnam. He was awarded many medals and ribbons including the Purple Heart, Bronze Good Conduct Medal-5 loops, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Silver Star Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and many others. After retiring from the Army, he continued his career path with retirements from Texas Department of Corrections and Wackenhut Security.

His leisure activities were fun filled with fishing, motorcycles, and hot rods. He was a funny guy, always had a joke to tell and a story to keep you listening, lots of one liners, a spitfire, stubborn, a little feisty but a whole lot of love which kept us all coming back for more. He looked you in the eye when he spoke to you. He was a nurturer always making sure those around him were cared for. He had a way of making you feel that you were the most important person in the world.

George went by son, brother, uncle, granddaddy, friend and soldier, but to me he was dad. I can’t wait to look into your baby blue eyes, until then know we love you-and that’s a lot! -Madeline.

George was preceded in death by his wife Nelda Simmons, parents Jeff and Alice (Casey) Simmons, brother Len Simmons, sister Bobby Nell (Simmons) Carey, brother Tom Simmons.

He is survived by his sister Virginia (Simmons) Houchins, brother, Ben Simmons, son James Fuqua and wife Gabi, grandchildren Katy, Lucas, Patrick, son Michael Reid White, daughter Madeline Simmons and husband John Webb, and granddaughter Aubrey Grace.

A Graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 3:15 P.M. at the Dallas- Ft. Worth National Cemetery with full military honors.
