Obituary for Larry Brooks

James Lawrence Brooks was born on July 5, 1959 to Suzanne and James Brooks in Dallas, Texas. He departed on November 9, 2022. A preacher’s son, he grew up in Tempe, Arizona and graduated from Midlothian High School. Known to many as Larry, he was affectionately called “Lar” – “Good Ole Lar”. For decades (70s and 80s) he made a living in printing distribution, first as a manager for the Dallas Times Herald, later for Auto Trader and other publications. He was also very successful in sales for Swan’s Delivery – Larry had the uncanny ability to easily talk anyone into buying the products. He had three major relationships in life, Deana Hooper Brooks whom he was married 1978 through 1984, Joy Westmoreland Brooks whom he was married from 1986 through 2004, and most recently his companion Debi Hunt Hooper from 2018 until the present. Joy and Larry share two beloved sons, Judson and Lukas. Larry was a big man, with a big heart!

Larry was a connoisseur of eclectic collections – from things to people. He loved to talk, and loved his people fiercely. No matter why, how, when, or where his relationship ended with you, he knew, and eventually you knew, he’d still be in your life – one way or another. He had a large, tight knit community that has remained for each other, and with each other through the decades.

His eclectic nature continued with his love of entertainment. He enjoyed a wide range of old movies and music, most notably music of all kinds – Jazz, Classic Rock, Heavy Metal and Blues. His favorite bands include the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Larry loved attending concerts, and he attended many. He enjoyed being anywhere near water but his most cherished place was with his friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his father James Brooks and his brother Randall Brooks.

Larry is survived by his mother Suzanne Fiscella; sons Judson Brooks and Lukas Brooks; stepmother Myra Brooks; brother Chris Brooks and wife Brooke; sister Jennifer Mays and partner Brian Beaty; nieces Chasey Ray, Savannah Dominquez, Virginia Brooks and Hannah Brooks; grandchildren Emily Wyman, Dakota Thacker, Caydence and Evan Kelley; his DINH Erin Hooper Kelley; ex-wives Deana Hooper Brooks and Joy Westmoreland Brooks, companion Debi Hunt Hooper and his many friends he considered family.
