Obituary for Joel Dennis Estes

Joel had a uniquely charismatic personality that really had an impact on anyone he knew. He was eccentric, funny, loyal, stubborn, kind, and respectful all wrapped up in a loving giant. His mother remembers him as a happy child who had a hard time keeping up with his brothers, and always ran with his shoes untied despite reminders to “tie your shoes, JoJo!”

He grew up in Grayson County, graduating from Sherman High School as an All-American football player. He was recruited by Barry Switzer to attend The University of Oklahoma where he helped the team win National Championships 1974-1976.

Joel loved to be on the water fishing or sailing, playing golf, gardening, or anywhere his children were. He spent a lot of his professional career with Zachry Construction where he met many lifelong friends & felt like he was helping build America. Joel was happily married to Cheryl Renee Estes for 18 years with a combined family of 7 children & 8 grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Cheryl Estes; children, Joel Dustin Estes, Dalton Wayborn Estes, Mitchell Clayton Estes, James Michael O’Horo, Jeremy Dillon Hazelwood, Heather Sue Hazelwood, Holly Elizabeth Tips; mother, Dorothy Lynnette Estes; brother, Patrick Rene Estes; nephews, Ret. Lt. Col. Michael Ned Estes, Jason Daniel Estes, Brian Patrick Estes, Andrew Steven Estes, Alex Joseph Estes and his pets Frank and Belle. He was preceded in death by his father, Ned Wayborn Estes and brother, Michael Ned Estes.

Please send flowers to Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home located at 511 W. Main Street, Waxahachie, Texas 75165. Joel’s favorite flowers were orchids.
