Obituary for Mary Jane Dickinson

Mary Jane Dickinson was born August 28, 1937 to Ada (Muncy) and Joseph Gray in Honey Grove, Texas. She departed February 9, 2023. Jane graduated Valedictorian of the 1957 class of Forest Avenue High School in Dallas. She married N.L Dickinson and the two spent 61 years together. Jane worked alongside her husband owning and managing convenience stores. Jane also worked as the Post Mistress of Ovilla, Texas, was a docent at the historic Waxahachie Courthouse, and was a volunteer nurse for the Dallas Independent School District. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who never said an unkind word about anyone.

Jane was the youngest of all the siblings. As a child, she loved to fish with her dad under the bridge. She fondly recalled the day she ran away – up into a tree – following the announcement of her sister Alma Marie’s elopement. Jane would often share stories of her childhood – when electricity came to her town, her family was so poor that they could only afford one light bulb and would move it from room to room as needed. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her sisters, children, and grandchildren. She looked forward to traveling with her husband. The two traveled to many states and landmarks in their RV, but her favorite place to be was Lake Bonham where they enjoyed their lake house and the company of family near by. Jane loved to celebrate with large family gatherings. Christmas and Easter were especially important. She always hosted a huge Easter Egg Hunt for all of the children in the family, each year. Jane could often be found listening to Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. She enjoyed watching classic game shows, most notably Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, The Price is Right and Lets Make a Deal.

Jane was a Godly woman. Though she was a member of Ovilla United Methodist Church, she was a loyal supporter of all the local churches. Jane always brought from their bake sales and had an extensive collection of church cookbooks.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband N.L. Dickinson; sisters Alma Marie West, Jimmie Jean Nichols, Vernell Gray; brothers Bloyse Gray and Joe Dana Gray.

Jane is survived by her two children Donna Anthony and Del Dickinson; grandchildren Candice, Kindra, Kellyn, Kimberly, Erin and Jake; and 11 great grandchildren.
