Obituary for Nora Shih

Nora Shih, 69, went to be with her heavenly father on September 2, 2022 after a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer.

She was born at Taipei, Taiwan on November 19, 1952. She grew up in Taiwan where she graduated from Providence University in Accounting. Nora quickly found work where she met the love of her life Fred Shih.

Nora and Fred married in Taiwan and their journey together brought them to the United States to Richmond, Virginia in the 1980s where their children Lisa and Jeffrey were born.

After some time in Virginia, they found an opportunity to come to Waxahachie, Texas to live out their dream of opening their own restaurant. They packed up everything they knew and moved to Texas in 1990 to open Golden China. Golden China (also know as the Red Door) was a staple in Waxahachie for over twenty years. It was a family business, not only in the sense of the Shih family, but the family of workers and customers that made the place special.

After closing the restaurant in 2010, Nora found her new calling and close friends at Pacific Plus International. She extended her friendship circle there working in Administration. She always loved telling interesting stories about the office, prices of food, and discussions with dear friends.

Nora had a special talent for cooking and loved food. She loved cooking special dishes for her family and would always want to explore all of the great Asian restaurants in Dallas. She always enjoyed a good Olive Garden and IHOP in Waxahachie.

One thing she loved more than cooking and exploring new places to eat was her grandson Reyhong. Outside of her two kids and Fred, Rey was her pride and joy. She loved getting to visit him in California, travel with him on vacations, and FaceTimeing with Rey to watch him run around the house.

Nora is survived by her daughter Lisa Ireland and her husband David Ireland, her son Jeffrey Shih and his wife Rita Shih, her grandson Reyhong Shih, her sister, nephew Joe and his kids, niece Ting-Ting and her kids, niece Rong-Rong, her other “daughters” Angie, Heather, and Julie, long time close family friend Lu Magana, plus numerous friends, colleagues, and loved ones. She is preceded in death by her husband Fred, father, mother, brother, and her beloved dog companions Smokey & Cash.

Nora is no longer with us in body, but her spirit lives within us all and we are all forever connected because of her generosity, kindness, and love of Christ. Hold Fred’s hand tight Nora as you watch down on us all.

Funeral service will be this Saturday, September 10th at 3p at Waxahachie City Cemetery in Waxahachie, Texas. Family friend Charles Chu will be officiating.
