Obituary for Peggy Ann Barker

Peggy Ann Fluegge Barker, 77, was born on November 12, 1945 in Pearsall, Texas to Frank Fluegge and Dona Rountree Fluegge. She was the middle child of 3 girls who grew up in Natalia, Texas, near San Antonio. Peggy was an excellent student in school who skipped 2 grades and graduated early at age 16 from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. She attended San Antonio College and later received her bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University in Denton.
Peggy met her future husband, Ernest Chester Barker, when she was visiting a friend in San Antonio. He served in the military in Vietnam, but he wrote letters to Peggy while he was gone. When Ernest returned to San Antonio, he asked for her hand in marriage. Peggy and Ernest married on August 6, 1965, and they enjoyed a long happy union until his death in 2013. Peggy and Ernest had 2 sons, Ernie and Kelly, and they lived in Irving, Texas for 30 years. Peggy was a strong woman who worked as a teacher for 28 years. She first worked at a daycare and later as an elementary and junior high teacher for Irving ISD. Peggy was an avid reader her whole life, and she and her husband Ernest enjoyed many evenings playing the domino game 42 with friends.
During her retirement, Peggy enjoyed spending time at her lake home in East Texas with her husband, their two sons, and grandchildren. She delighted in helping her grandchildren learn and watching them grow. Peggy and Ernest were active church members at Clearwater Baptist Church in East Texas for many years. Near the end of her life, Peggy moved to Waxahachie, Texas to live near her sons and grandchildren.
Peggy is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Dona Fluegge, her husband Ernest Barker, and two nephews. She is survived by her sisters Dona Mays and Linda Fowler; Peggy’s sons and daughters-in-law Ernie and Susan Barker, Kelly and Sandra Barker, two nephews, and 4 grandchildren, Ben, Grace, Sarah, and Elizabeth.
