Obituary for Sammy Mac Higgins

Sammy Mac Higgins, 76 years old, of Fredericksburg, Texas passed away on Sunday, May 03, 2020.

He was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Talmadge Herston Higgins and Ann Elizabeth Vincent Higgins on December 1, 1943. He graduated from the University of North Texas in 1966 where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. He married Rebecca Ann Brubaker on April 12, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. He started out his business career selling life insurance in the Dallas area. And in true Sammy Mac fashion, he opened a combination business selling insurance in the front and bar-b-que out the back. Sammy Mac won many blue ribbons for his cooking talents at the State Fair of Texas. These were the first of many trophies and accolades to come. His highest honors were being chosen as guest chef at Beringer Vineyards in Napa, pairing wine and Texas BBQ in 1985 as well as being inducted into the Waxahachie Hall of Fame – Culinary of Fine Arts in 2018. He was featured in numerous magazines including Bon Appetite and many talk shows. He was the national spokeperson for Rotel Tomatoes & Ranch Style Beans, Wolf Brand Chili, and Kingsford Charcoal. He published the following cookbooks: Snake Rattle and Rotel; Kingsford Best BBQ Recipes; Biscuits and Gravy with a Side of Humor; and I’m Glad I Ate When I Did ‘Cause I’m Not Hungry Now. In his spare time, Sam loved coaching, poker, and telling Texas tall tales. For the last 21 years, he and Becky have loved running the successful Chuckwagon Inn Bed and Breakfast.

Sammy Mac Higgins is preceded in death by his parents Talmadge and Ann Elizabeth and is survived by his wife Becky, sisters Pam Higgins King and husband Dub, and Penny Beth Higgins, and his three children Brandy Higgins Owens and her husband Cliff, Hillary Higgins, Sam Higgins and his wife Jenny. He has six grandchildren, Samantha Owens, Megan Owens, Cody Owens, Sam Higgins, Anna Higgins, and Ben Higgins. Lastly, he has two great-grandchildren Emma and Emery Owens. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Waxahachie, Texas with Reed Higgins officiating. Flowers and condolences may be offered at Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home: 511 W Main St, Waxahachie, TX 75165.
