Obituary for Walter Buchanan

Walter Addison Buchanan, born October 6, 1935 outside Paragould, Arkansas, passed away on May 24, 2023 in Dallas, Texas. Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Billie Dixon Buchanan, grandparents, Addison Buchanan, Matilda Buchanan, Walter Greenway, and Leta Greenway, and his parents Burl and Delpha Greenway Buchanan. A grandson Zachary Lane Osborn, a brother, Clif Buchanan, and sisters Ileta Beckloff and Jenette Buchanan also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children: Joe Buchanan and Jill (Stewart) Powers of Waxahachie, Texas and Jan (Scott) Osborn of Dallas, Texas, a sister Betty Buchanan Gatlin of Paragould, Arkansas, grandchildren Justin (Jaclyn) Lantz, Jerrod (Jennifer) Lantz, Amanda (Andy) Sanchez, Haley Buchanan, Geoffrey Powers, Whitney (Todd) Alexander, Alexander Osborn and Nicholas Osborn, and six great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.

Walter’s family moved from Paragould, Arkansas to Springfield, Missouri when he was two years old, where he attended school for first through eleventh grades. In 1952, he attended Athens Bible School in Athens, Alabama, and graduated from high school there in May, 1953. From 1954-1955, he attended Freed Hardeman College in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas in 1957. In 1956, he married his college sweetheart, Billie Louise Dixon, in Searcy, Arkansas.

Walter dedicated his life to preaching the Word of God, starting his ministry in Alabama in 1954. He also spent years in Springfield and Monett, Missouri; Camden and Bentonville, Arkansas; Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Mesquite, Italy, and Waxahachie, Texas. He held many yearly gospel meetings across these states, making and maintaining lifelong friends wherever he and Billie traveled.

In 1965, along with other church members in the area, Walter was instrumental in founding Green Valley Bible Camp in Rogers, Arkansas. He maintained his connection with this camp for many years, and former campers and counselors remember his blowing the whistle and waking up the camp with his early morning “Rise and Shine” speeches.

In every town where he lived, he was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, making and maintaining relationships within the communities and improving the social structure of each town. For over 30 years, every Saturday at 7:45 a.m. he broadcast a Bible lesson on local radio station KBEC 1390 AM.

He also was active within the missionary community, making mission trips to Africa and Romania to spread the Gospel and improve the lives of people in the communities. He was an avid fisherman who knew all of the best fishing spots on Table Rock Lake in Missouri, where he could take some time to commune with nature and bring home his catch. Walter treasured his time with his family; he loved his brother, sisters, children and spouses, nephews, nieces, and especially his grandchildren.
